Bus is reaching it’s limits

We have used bus based interconnect in our system designs to solve most of our interconnect problems very effectively. Wider and faster buses continue to work. But the laws of physics can not be avoided. A bus could be so long. It can only have so many taps. Controlling stub lengths and loading characteristics begin to become a much harder job.

Interconnect or network?

As more and more system components are exchanging information the interconnect model starts to look more like networks. But today’s networks simply do not offer the speed-bandwidth we need cost effectively. These networks were simply designed with a different model in mind!

What’s the new approach?

To overcome the limitations of bus and provide the characteristics of a network, Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI), an interconnect standard, was standardized by IEEE in 1994. This standard is based on point to point unidirectional transmission line like connections. It gives SCI the capability of transferring data at a rate of gigabytes per second. Also the complex issue of managing the forward progress at the transport layer, fair use of interconnect resources, are all handled in the protocol defined in the standard.
